Beyoncé’s stylist Ty Hunter shares his thoughts on fashion trends

  • Ty Hunter is one of Hollywood’s top celebrity stylists, working with Beyoncé and Billy Porter.
  • Insider spoke to him about his book, his career and why he almost hated fashion.
  • He also spoke about stars wearing underwear as pants and the controversial ballerina trend.

Ty Hunter is arguably one of the most influential celebrity stylists.

He rose to fame styling Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé – a job he got by hooking up with Queen B’s mother – and now works with red carpet icon Billy Porter.

He is also the author of a new paper, Makeover From Within: Lessons in Hardship, Acceptance, and Self-Discovery.

After speaking to Hunter about his book and his career, Insider asked him about some of today’s most popular and controversial fashion trends – including sheer clothing, underwear as pants and ballet flats.

Ty Hunter knows that pure fashion is trendy, but he thinks it has to be innovative

The “naked” fashion trend is one that never seems to go away.

Some stars like Hayley Williams occasionally wear see-through garments to make bold fashion statements. However, others like Kate Moss and Kendall Jenner have made see-through outfits an everyday staple.

Thanks in part to Hunter. He often styled Destiny’s Child in skintight outfits in the ’90s and added sheer elements to many of Beyoncé’s famous looks during her solo career.

While Hunter said he had “no problem” with see-through looks, which are still popular today, he noted he was almost sick of them.

“I feel like we’ve done it so many times. We did it and we did it right,” he said, laughing. “I got to a point where I was like, ‘I don’t want to just see anything else. I’m tired of seeing it.'”

“But now I see people tricking it a bit and making it more interesting,” he continued. “As long as you are creative and modernize it.”

Hunter isn’t the only one wanting to see new takes on the fashion favourite. Speaking to Insider in December, designer Christian Siriano said he’s seen so many sheer looks that he’s now interested in “celebrating the silhouette” and reimagining the trend.

“That doesn’t always mean you have to be transparent, nude or something,” Siriano said. “Sometimes a nice covered look can be just as sexy.”

Stars can’t stop wearing underwear as pants. Hunter says if you want to try the trend now is the time.

During Paris Fashion Week in September 2022, Kylie Jenner embraced an interesting style trend: wearing underwear as outerwear.

The outfit was casual but effective. Shortly thereafter, Tessa Thompson, Kendall Jenner, and other stars began wearing lingerie with pantyhose instead of traditional bottoms.

Bella Hadid then took it a step further when she ditched tights and wore a white pair of underwear as shorts, and stars like Rita Ora opted for see-through dresses showing off her underwear at the 2022 Fashion Awards.

Hunter’s take on the controversial trend is simple. He said if you’re comfortable with it, you should try the trend and “remove it from your system.”

“Then at least you have those pictures and you can show your kids and grandkids how ‘Grandma was hot,'” he said.

Hunter was once “anti-flat” when it came to shoes, but today he sees things differently

One of the most talked about shoe trends of 2023 may be nostalgic for some: ballet flats.

The shoes were “a must-have”, as fashion journalist Tyler McCall recently told Refinery29, and were often worn by both celebrities and catwalks.

Although some argue that the shoes are uncomfortable and impractical, others love the shoes and welcome the resurgence of the “ballet core.”

If apartments had made a comeback before 2020, Hunter probably wouldn’t have been on board. He told Insider that he’s spent “many, many years” being “anti-flat,” whether it’s dressing his friends and family or stars like Beyoncé.

“I thought women should always wear heels,” he said.

But since 2020, Hunter’s opinion has changed drastically.

“During COVID, everyone got used to wearing mules and slippers — we just sort of readjusted, you know?” he added. “So now I’m thinking, if it’s hot, why not?”
