LA’s fashion rise was the subject of Saks Dinner – WWD

Saks Fifth Avenue toasted Los Angeles on Wednesday night, hosting a dinner party for friends and clients at new hotspot Caviar Kaspia.

The retailer turns its attention to the market next year when it takes over the former Barneys New York building on Wilshire Boulevard and opens its Saks store there in fall 2023.

Saks is also not giving up its current building to be used for other projects.

“LA is such an important market and if you’re not careful you can live in a bubble in New York. It’s been part of Saks almost since Saks has been Saks. It was one of our first deals,” said Chief Executive Officer Marc Metrick.

“We’re investing in the market, we’ve taken over the Barneys building and the adjacent car park… This is a market that has been underdeveloped for us and it’s important. Check out what all the brands are doing at Rodeo. We’re not alone here,” he continued.

In fact, Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton is in the midst of developing a nine-story Cheval Blanc hotel on Rodeo Drive, where it also bought the Luxe hotel building and just opened its first LA Loewe store; Dior is soon to break ground on a four-story boutique and restaurant, and Chanel is in the process of building its boutique, which will be one of the brand’s largest in the world.

Emma Roberts and boyfriend Cody John, Ava Phillippe, Alexandra Shipp, Kathy Hilton, Anita Ko and others sat under the stars at the restaurant, sipping champagne and eating baked caviar potatoes with hand-calligraphed spoons.

The conversation turned to year-end crazy fashion news, including Balenciaga’s disturbing ad campaigns (“I think the brand is dead, isn’t it?” said one guest) and Alessandro Michele’s surprise departure from Gucci.

People who caught sight of the designer in LA a few weeks ago for the LACMA Art + Film Gala said they didn’t see any signs he was walking but suggested he landed on his feet, maybe even “a tom.” Ford” and launch his own brand, which has proven to be quite lucrative.

LA’s continued rise has been a hot topic, from the upcoming Celine and Versace runway shows here to the ongoing store openings that don’t seem to stop in 2023. Beauty entrepreneur Tina Craig announced that she will be spending a lot more time in LA as she opens her first U Beauty store here.

“It’s my second time here in a month and my wife is starting to ask questions,” Metrick joked during his toast to the crowd, referring to an event he hosted with Staud’s Sarah Staudinger at Dawnridge a few weeks ago moderated by Tony Duquette. He continued, “Enjoy the night, enjoy the carbs. It’s okay if they’re French.”
