Small independent care home Chalcraft Hall on the Bognor Regis coast has evolved into a ‘home away from home’, welcoming residents into a warm, friendly environment.
Its dedicated staff is valued as much as its residents, creating a happy atmosphere in which to live and work.
Managers know the importance of stimulating residents and a garden center behind the care home helps as regular visits can be made to buy seeds and plants or just drop by for a tea or coffee.
Director Sean Minks explains: “We are a small home and this allows our employees to develop very close relationships with the people we care for. It is an intimate environment that allows for an extremely high level of person-centred care – this helps develop a personal and warm relationship with our residents and their families.
“We know how important it is to keep residents stimulated and engaged. We always find the little details we can find about people and use those to get the best results for those we care about. We have a few instances where individuals have been told they will never walk again, which we have achieved through hard work, attention and constant recovery practices.”
Activities Coordinator, Carol Hall, organizes twice-daily exercises and walks, as well as name that tune, word searches and puzzles, arts and crafts, and a range of other activities. Trips to the local church can be arranged for those who wish.
Carol says: “Our garden club is particularly popular as residents can choose their own flowers and plants, which we arrange through escorted visits to the garden center next door, and then pot and grow them in our beautiful garden through our garden club.
“We do everything we can to accommodate everyone’s likes and dislikes, and some want to get involved while others might just want to sit and listen or watch.”
She adds: “There is a nice family feel here between the staff and the residents. The level of care and dedication is really high.”
For trips further afield, families have the Bognor Regis coast on their doorstep to take relatives on family visits.
Some of the 20 spacious bedrooms are more apartment-like, with separate sleeping and living areas and garden views.
Their large windows make them light and airy and they are tastefully decorated to a high standard. There are also two lounges, a dining room and patio areas.
