With five bedrooms and five public spaces, not only can a large family afford to all have their own space, but the Ochil View is surrounded by a gorgeous garden set up for relaxation — complete with a hot tub, putting green and a Soccer field and so on. The crowning glory is a separate Garden Lodge with its own bar.
However, the property is just as well set up to provide entertaining space on a larger scale once stay-at-home restrictions are eased, according to Ochil View’s owners, Ryder Cup winner Stephen Gallacher and his wife Helen, who bought it 15 years ago.
The couple are both from Bathgate but appreciate the property’s location – just a mile from Linlithgow train station, convenient for the capital and Glasgow, and 11 miles from Edinburgh Airport.
Helen explains: “The schools are great and it’s close to Kingsfield Golf Center where Stephen trains, about a three minute drive.”
Ochil View was built 20 years ago by Stewart Homes, one of only four on a quiet cul-de-sac.
The Gallachers have completed three major projects since they moved in and renovated the kitchen more than once, most recently last year.
Helen remembers: “First we converted the double garage into a fitness studio and set up an office above it.”
She manages the accounts for her husband and their charity, the Stephen Gallacher Foundation, which supports young golfers, giving the couple a business space separate from family life.
Her next project was a double height extension on one side of the house, adding a dining room with direct access to the outdoor patio via folding sliding doors and a bedroom above.
The outside area leads to the Garden Lodge, the Gallachers’ latest project, which luckily was completed the year before lockdown.
Helen admits: “We got the timing right. It has a pub feel so during lockdown it felt a bit like going out when we couldn’t. Stephen and our son Jack also watch football there together.
“It’s been a fantastic addition and definitely keeps the house from getting messy, now we can have people again.”
The lodge has a shower room and storage room and right next to it is a putting green – created by Stephen for practicing at home.
The field to the rear of the property is also used for sports, but provides convenient parking if the Gallachers host larger gatherings, and Helen points out that it has access from the street and garden, making it suitable for a family with one Pony or cattle would be suitable. At half an acre it is an impressively large piece of land to add to a house that is not rural.
Inside, the decor is neutral to suit the Gallachers’ minimalist tastes and make the most of the natural light that floods in. The central vertical window at the front of the house, which illuminates the glass staircase, is a highlight.
The new kitchen is by Kutchenhaus from Linlithgow and leads to a dining room and living room creating a relaxed family area. In addition, there is a cinema room and another lounge, as well as a more formal dining room, a whole wall of which opens onto the garden.
Upstairs are five bedrooms, three bathrooms and two dressing rooms, both fully furnished with bespoke storage shelving.
Ochil View has been designed and customized to be practical with an enviable split of purpose – be it work, sport, watching a movie or quiet drinks.
Helen says: “It means we can keep it really clean. As a professional athlete you need to be so organized, punctual and relaxed otherwise it could affect your job.”
It is an easy to manage house and the garden is also low maintenance but still very attractive with mature shrubs and trees lit by pretty garden lights and enclosed by a wall.
The Gallachers have selectively planted for additional screening, both to maintain their privacy and to protect the family dog - a Cockerpoo named Smudge. Electric gates mean the property is fully fenced.
With their daughter Ellie on their way to university, Stephen and Helen move back to Bathgate to be closer to the extended family.
However, the couple really made the most of the luxury of Ochil View. Helen shares: “Last month we had 70 people for Ellie’s 18th and we’ve had different parties over the years.
“I think there’s a risk that our friends and family will miss the house as much as we do.”
Ochil View, near Linlithgow, West Lothian, is priced at over £1.1m.
