The program will provide middle and senior managers and C-suite executives in the fashion industry, as well as entrepreneurs and small business owners, with the knowledge and tools they need to steer their companies towards sustainability. As circular fashion is a relatively new concept in the industry, this course offers students a unique opportunity to learn key concepts that will give them a competitive edge as the fashion industry faces increasing pressure to be more environmentally friendly.

This six-week program, offered entirely online in English to students around the world, begins June 8, 2022. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a verified digital certificate of completion from SDA Bocconi School of Management.

While the fashion industry makes a significant contribution to the global economy, it also has one of the largest environmental footprints. According to the Global Fashion Agenda Fashion CEO Agenda 2021, “Fashion is primarily produced in a linear system of ‘take, make, discard’, with 73% of the world’s clothing eventually ending up in landfills.” Although many companies have begun to rethink their models to encourage reuse and Enabling recycling of textiles on a large scale, challenges such as scalability, affordability and profitability complicate the implementation of sustainable fashion. However, to ensure that the planet’s resources are not depleted faster than they are replenished, business models are changing. For circular models to work, stakeholders at all points of the value chain must be committed and have the knowledge to implement a sustainable system.

“For the fashion industry to make the necessary transition from existing linear business models to circular fashion, leaders need to be informed about what’s at stake and how to drive a real movement towards sustainability,” she says Francesca Romana Rinaldi, Faculty Director and Lecturer in the Department of Sustainability at the SDA Bocconi School of Management. “This course is critical for current and future industry leaders who really want to make a difference.”

The program consists of six weekly modules focused on surveys, interactive activities, peer discussions, case studies and role-play simulations. The course is led by Rinaldi, and students also learn directly from over 40 industry experts in live sessions.

By the end of the program, students will understand how to apply sustainable practices to the business model of a fashion organization. This includes identifying relevant platforms and technologies; compare opportunities, challenges and trade-offs; Develop leadership skills to drive a smooth transition to circular fashion and communicate with consumers and stakeholders.

“Sustainability is more than a buzzword in the fashion industry,” he says Lisa Rohrer, Head of University Partnerships at Emeritus. “We are proud to partner with the SDA Bocconi School of Management on a pioneering course that provides fashion executives and entrepreneurs with the perspective and expertise to drive real change in their organizations and prioritize the planet.”
