May 21st: What is it about? It’s World Bee Day. The Japanese Friendship Garden works with other Balboa Park and community organizations to host exciting events to raise awareness of the importance of bees and all pollinators in gardens, the threats they face and the actions people are taking can take for their protection. The flying insects are presented through exhibitions, music, interactive demonstrations, microscopic observations and art, and educational hands-on activities. Cost: Free with admission. 8th-12th June 15-19, 22-26, 29-4 July: The San Diego County Fair offers homeowners and gardeners the opportunity to see the latest trends in home decor, garden design and outdoor living. Experts and vendors are available to answer questions. Tickets: $12-20: $15 parking; Events such as concerts cost extra. June 11th: Six gardens in San Diego’s Kensington area will be featured at the San Diego Floral Association’s 2022 Garden Tour. In addition to a variety of plants, the gardens have paving stones and landscape decorations such as fountains. Tickets: $25 in advance, $30 on the day. June 11th: Interested in garden composting? Experts from the Solana Center for Eco-Innovation use tried-and-true advice and interactive demonstrations to show you how to get started with a bin that suits your needs and lifestyle during a workshop. June 11th: Buildings designed by well-known architects and those who played civic roles in Oceanside are highlighted during the Downtown Oceanside History Walk. The tour, hosted by the Oceanside Historical Society, showcases different styles of architecture ranging from modern to Mission Revival. For free. 11-12 June: The San Diego Bromeliad Society Plant Sale is a two-day event featuring tillandsias and other colorful bromeliads on display by vendors and society members. For free. 12th of June: There will be three plant-related experiences during the monthly Plant Days and Orchid Odyssey event at the San Diego Zoo. The converted Orchid Odyssey greenhouse is open from 10am to 2pm. Visitors can also tour the greenhouse for carnivorous plants from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Horticultural staff are available to answer questions about these plants. And a botanical bus tour that starts at 11 a.m. is led by a different horticultural worker each month. Cost: Zoo admission. Until June 12th: The World of Orchids exhibit will feature hundreds of plants on display at the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory at the San Diego Botanic Garden. On the weekends, visitors can get free first-hand knowledge and advice on choosing the best plant for their garden, managing an orchid purchase, getting an orchid to bloom again and repotting an orchid. 15th June: How do you create a garden that thrives for a whole year? Award-winning landscape architect Linda Bresler will show attendees at the San Diego Flora Association gathering how flowers, shrubs and trees can create a spectacular palette of color that thrives in summer heat and winter rains.
