The Gilded Age was a period of American history marked by rapid change and economic growth and even greater accumulation of wealth for the nation’s wealthiest. It’s a period we probably shouldn’t romanticize, given the corruption that takes place beneath the surface (hence the ‘gilded’ part of the name), but we can at least admire the architecture that dates back to that period, like the Newport Mansions or this equally opulent home on the Beverly waterfront. Tucked away in a private seaside enclave, this seaside mansion was originally built during the Golden Age with gardens designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

This mansion was redesigned in 1950 and transformed into a mid-century modern masterpiece. Renovated and modernized over the years to come, the next owners of this home will enjoy modern details on the inside with touches of Gilded Age drama on the outside. Visitors driving past this home are greeted by a stone wall and wrought iron gate. Once you are granted entry you are led down to a circular stone driveway which serves as the front entrance to the home, with manicured shrubs surrounding the space giving it a garden-like feel.

Inside you will find high-end design that makes this home feel a bit more 21st century. Cool natural wood finishes and an abundance of tall windows make the space feel open, airy and bright. Of course, part of the spacious feeling also comes from the size: The floor plan includes four bedrooms, three full bathrooms, four reception rooms and a kitchen with state-of-the-art cooking appliances.

Outside, the new owners of this joint will enjoy almost 8.5 acres of land. With all this property to work with, Olmsted really went to town, and his touch is still evident in the backyard design. Perfectly trimmed hedges and lush shrubs and trees line two dramatic staircases that wind down to a stone patio. From there, an additional wide staircase leads down to a magnificent pool overlooking the water.
