‘I only build things in the woods!’: Lancashire’s award-winning glamping business is featured on BBC, Channel 4 and E4

“We were all stuck at home and I was trying to do something with the kids,” explains Derry, 39. “As the days rolled into weeks and months, I kept building.”

A seating area followed, as did a patio, jacuzzi, sauna and garden capsule. Derry kept people updated on Facebook and soon he was going viral on social media among people dreaming of a lockdown getaway.

“People from all over the world have contacted me and asked if they could come and stay!” says Derri. “I saw a business opportunity so I jumped at it and started Secret Garden Glamping. Within three days I was fully booked for two years.

“The demand was there, it was just about how fast I could build things,” adds Derry of his burgeoning Skelmersdale company. “It’s like being a big kid again, getting paid to build dens in the woods!”

With idyllic views from 6 acres of woodland grounds, plus luxury amenities in all seven cottages, Secret Garden Glamping has exploded and was recently awarded Best New Tourism Business at the Lancashire Tourism Awards 2021.

With a range of pods, lodges and yurts, the glamping site strikes a balance between country and rustic with modern and glamorous, with all units boasting hot tubs as well as features like underfloor heating, outdoor TVs, bar areas, saunas and fireplaces.

“I never know what I’m building when I start, I just start,” explains Standish’s Derry. “It’s about my vision and keeping it organic; Every day is exciting because I learn something new, do something new or meet someone new.

“I love doing that little bit extra – I don’t want to be like Center Parcs where people are just another number,” he adds. “Winning awards was a highlight because I never started as a company; If I had done it, it wouldn’t be what it is now, which is a passion.

“I couldn’t believe I was nominated for Best New Tourism Business, let alone the winner! We were against Hilton! How can you compete against them? I only build things in the forest!”

As well as proving popular with bettors, Secret Garden Glamping has attracted television interest, having been featured on BBC1, E4 and Channel 4 as part of programs such as Hot Tubs Brits, Four in a Bed and Celebs Go Dating became.

And with a waiting list of 30,000, Derry is far from finished building, with plans to add another unit later this year and another five if they get permission to expand the site. He even has ambitions to open a second location.

“The future is all about keeping that sense of fun and excitement,” says Derry. “I want to explore new ideas and surpass myself with each new session.”
