Lux in the city: Syracuse Fashion Week concludes with an avant-garde runway in an upscale downtown apartment building

Featuring glamorous prom dresses, upcycled denim and everything in between, the final runway show of Syracuse Fashion Week 2022 took place at the Washington Luxury Apartments on Saturday night.

The former NYNEX building has undergone a $43 million renovation in recent years, converting the top nine floors of the 10-story building into more than 200 luxury apartments with panoramic views of Syracuse’s skyline.

A catwalk took over the lounge on one of the building’s upper floors, with models circling the audience seated on casual sofas and banquettes. The building was constructed in 1970 and housed the offices of the New York Telephone Co. and its successor, Nynex. It stood empty for many years before the conversion to “New York City Style Living” took place.

Here are some highlights from the final night of Syracuse Fashion Week 2022:

· The show started Kalthom Aljiboury, an independent designer who graduated from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Aljiboury’s line consisted of long, majestically styled dresses and cover-ups. Each piece is highly detailed and embellished with beautiful stitchwork.

· A designer’s mother-daughter collection Ezmira Neshawait featured thrift and upcycled matching looks. The designer said she wants to create pieces that are as unique as any mother-daughter relationship. One of the mother-daughter couples hopped down the runway in jeans, Converse and white tutus, and styled their hair with pink highlights and purple ribbons.

· Lucky Mae’s closet took to the runway for a second straight night, this time with a modern twist on Netflix Bridgerton. The intricate vintage and retro-inspired garments were paired with garters, stockings, headpieces and beadwork. The models wore white and colored bustiers and corsets and grandiose wigs.

· Students from Cazenovia College’s fashion department changed the pace of the show as models rocked the runway in their upcycled denim outfits. The college project Look Again uses garments donated to consignment shop The Key and transforms everyday items into unique fashion statements.

The students sent two collections down the runway, including floral prints and swimwear paired with tan wedges and colorful pumps.

· Bliss Bridal of Baldwinsville shared several lavish wedding dresses as well as bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses.

· That alter ego closed the show in colorful mesh cardigans, bikini wraps, leggings and crop tops. One of the models walked the runway in a blue tutu-style one-piece suit, which she paired with an orange headpiece. Rainbow colored veils, skirts and accessories danced down the runway, including a belt emblazoned with the word ‘HUMAN’ in rainbow colours.
