Staying focused can be difficult, but it can be especially difficult when you’re constantly distracted. In today’s always-connected world, redirects are just a click away. Even in peaceful times, the distraction is handy when you check your Instagram notifications or the latest news headlines. Improving your memory and concentration can increase your productivity and the quality of your work. Sustaining attention allows us to build our inner reality so that the thoughts, motivations, and emotions most relevant to our goals are front and center in our mind.
Here are 4 ways you can improve your ability to focus and concentrate.
1. Train your brain
We’re more likely to feel scattered, have trouble concentrating, or be forgetful if we’re not moving and keeping our minds fresh. We wouldn’t expect to hit the gym for three months and then have muscle and strength for the rest of our lives if we didn’t keep exercising, and the same goes for exercising our mind. Certain types of games can help you improve your concentration. You could try sudoku and crosswords, jigsaw puzzles and chess and memory games that involve word searches or scrambling.
2. Eliminate distractions
Reducing these distractions isn’t always as easy as it sounds. While it can be so easy to turn off the TV or radio, dealing with a disruptive co-worker, spouse, child, or roommate can be far more difficult. To limit or eliminate such internal distractions, make sure you are well rested before the activity and use positive ideas to combat anxiety and worry. When your mind wanders to distracting thoughts, consciously bring your attention back to the activity at hand.
3. Meditate
Meditation is beneficial for several reasons. It reduces stress, promotes relaxation and can improve your attention span. According to research, it boosts the gray matter in the brain, which improves memory and cognition. Start your morning with a small meditation session to reap the benefits of meditation at work. Meditation can be as simple as sitting up in bed for a few minutes and focusing on your breathing.
4. Increase your well-being
Physical activity, diet and weight are all factors that can affect how well you work and concentrate. For example, if you skip breakfast, you probably won’t be able to do your chores as well as you can until noon because of feelings of hunger. Taking care of your health, staying active, and eating focus-boosting foods can improve your focus.
Inefficiency results from a lack of focus. What is less well known is that a focused mind is not only successful because it can solve problems more quickly, but also because difficulties seem to evaporate before its focused energies without even having to be solved.
